We will never be able to comprehend their awful woe
In the fields they stood side by side together
Fighting for our country in all kinds of weather
Trench warfare began in September 1914
Living in muddy fields hoping they couldn’t be seen
Clouds of poisonous gas floating from side to side
Men falling quickly, others unwillingly cried
A battered shaking hand attempts to write a letter
In the rainy cold night he gets wetter and wetter
Under the mass bombing and gun fire he tries to remain calm
Struggling to write a bullet shaves his bleeding arm
In 1916 The Battle of the Somme 1st July
The bloodiest battle, so many questions each asking why
The men, some young, didn’t know what to expect
The least we can do is show them some rightful respect
Not knowing if loved ones will return home once more
All because of a conflict they called the Great War
A letter home to confirm your loved one still drawing breath
Not wanting to open the door to a stranger informing his
death
These men fought unwittingly for the life we have now
They fought for our freedom for this they did vow
We should honour and respect them this and every November
By wearing our poppy we all need to remember
